My War Stories

12/7/1941 Remember doing homework for his class when the landlord told him to turn on the radio. Don was actually not surprised because one of his teachers and Colonel in the Nation Guard had predicted the event was going to happen and recommended that Don enlists in the service that he wanted.
1942 Tried to enlist into the Navy but they would not take him because his vision was so bad without his glasses.
1943 Drafted when we he was 19 after being in college for one year in Michigan.
1944 Experiencing the waves of V1’s rockets attacking England was quite frightening. As soon as the engine would stop the rocket would come down, Don heard the engine stop while he was in a bathroom near a window and when it exploded the concussion pushed the window towards him.
6/1944 Don most vivid memory was going a shore at Omaha Beach, Normandy three weeks after the invasion seeing the utter devastation.
1945 Don does not recall anyone complaining about having to serve because they felt it was their duty to the country.
