Enlisted into the Army with the help of his Father.

Went to basic training in Atterbury, Indiana then to Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. It was supposed to be 12 weeks then the Army changed it to 10 weeks then finally to 6 weeks. They only taught him shoot the M-1, put on the bayonet and through hand grenades.

Went to Camp Kilmer, New Jersey for two days before embarking to the European Theater of Operations. After just one day at sea Richard became sick like most of the other soldiers and could not wait to get to Le Harve, France.

He was instructed to go to Marseille, France for POW guard duty. Guarded prisoners for 9 months until they finally told all the German prisoners to just go home but Richard was not sure how they actually got home.
