James was drafted into the Army and was stationed at a training command. James maintained B-17s and B-24s for flight training. Did training at Fort Thomas, Kentucky then to Miami Beach, Florida for 1 month, then to Amarillo, Texas for 3 months. He moved around the US to airports where training was conducted. At the end of the war James was sent to California to put B-29’s to sleep, the first thing he did was remove the clock because if he did not someone would steal it.
