My War Stories

1945 Roy was stationed in the Philippines for 18 months with the 38th Infantry Division. One day is was in a town full of Japanese and they told him that people were waving a flag across the river. Roy and his partner crossed the long but shallow river to assess the situation, he searched each Japanese one at a time them ushered him across the river, 15 in total. They tried to interrogate them but could not figure out who was in charge, Roy came up with an idea and handed his cigarette to a soldier and quickly found out who was in charge as the soldier was beaten by his own superior.
1945 Roy was working in regimental headquarters and had a desk. Without him knowing Japanese boy was put in a chair next to him and startled him. The Japanese kid did not want to go to the local Philippines because they would have killed him so Roy made it so that would not happen.
1946 When Roy was mustered out of Fort Hayes, he was on his own. He had to find his way out of the complex and to the highway where he thumbed his way to Zanesville, Ohio and phoned his wife. Roy knew how to take care of himself and was also fearless.
