My War Stories
1943 Enlisted when he was 17.
1944 Went to basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois then to gunnery school for several weeks.
1944 Went to New Orleans, Louisiana to pick up his ship which was the LCT 722 on top of a LST 560. His ship was in three pieces 120 feet long by 60 feet wide. Left New Orleans for Cuba then went through the Panama Canal to Manus Islands in the Admiralty Islands which took 53 days. His crew had to put their ship together once they arrived.
1945 Charles was a gunners mate in charge of two 20 mm guns and four 50 caliber machine guns. Credited with shooting down one Japanese plane and sinking two suicide boats.
1945 D plus 4 after the invasion of Borneo when they put their ship together. Went to the Philippines. D plus 2 as Beack. Main job was to unload ammunition and tanks to the beaches.
1945 Mariveles Bay anchor for the night when Japanese suicide boats took out a few of his ships. Charle’s boat eescued a lot of men from the water.
1945 Corregidor, Philippines took a load of Marines and had to use their guns to fight off the onslaught but did not have to use the guns a lot in other campaigns.
8/1945 Then loaded up to go to Japanese Mainland then the second atomic bomb was dropped ending the war then they could unload and went to Pacific Bay until it was time to go home.
