My War Stories
1944 Drafted into the Army.
1944 Took troop ship out of San Francisco en route to Australia unescorted. Then joined the 7th replacement depot in the Philippines for 5 or 6 weeks. Then sent to General Headquarters for the Pacific in Manilla for the remainder of the war. Once war was over went to Tokyo, Japan and finished his service there.
1945 Bob was a clerk typist who was in the government section who typed of the constitution and very government documents for Japan like finance and transportation.
1945 Bob saw General MacArthur 3 or 4 times every day, not to talk to him but seeing him coming and going. MacArthur was one of the most egotistical people one could ever meet. He was so arrogant that he was removed from the general ranks of the regular army. However MacArthur was extremely intelligent and did his job well. One never wanted to beat MacArthur in bridge because he did not like to lose. Bob never talked to MacArthur all correspondence went through hid commanding officer General Courtney Whitney.
