My War Stories
1943 Drafted 1943 into the Army Air Corps. Was a gunner on a B-17 in England. 8th Air Force, 390th bomb group, 570 squadron. Flew 35 missions, got shot down on 31st mission. First mission was on D-Day in Normandy. Plan was called The Bad Egg. On 31st, over Dusseldorf, Germany, 5 of 11 B-17 got knocked out only two made it back. Plane caught on fire and knocked out three of the four engines and through everything out. Was able to find a small airstrip to crash land in France. Then came home to teach gunnery school and got married to the neighbor girl.
