Raymond served in the Vietnam War. The first place he went was Cam Rahn Bay, where he stayed for thirty days. next he went to Nha Trang. On arrival the heat and humidity was overwhelming and there was a rocket attack on the airfield as they landed. He was the operations officer at a major port (Cam Rahn Bay). he was then choosen to become the Port Commander of the Army water port of Nha Trang. He did not see any combat but, he drove through enemy held areas and did witness people being killed. |

While living with his parents in Kansas City, Missouri, Raymond decided to enlist for three years. He enlisted because he thought it was his duty and so that he wouldnt have to worry about being drafted again. He joined the Army because it offered the best programs and it was three years instead of four like in the Army and Navy. His first days of service were in Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri and were rainy and cold. Until he got the hang of things, it was miserable. Basic trainging consisted of lots of exercising and classroom training, plenty of marching drills, surprisingly good food, and new people who became good friends. His drill instructor was Staff SCT Parks, who seemed to be as tough as nails. The strength of the friendships he made kept him going trough it. |
