Help identifying a potential war veteran.

I am wondering if someone may be able to identify the gentleman in this tin type. The matting shows 2 stars which may indicate he was an officer. The 2 canes may have come from a war injury. The tin type is rather large and colorized which would probably mean he was wealthy at the time this portrait was done. This tin type was found hidden under a Saturday Evening Post Cover in a frame purchased at a garage sale almost 30 years ago. My 89 year old aunt and uncle (whom the art belongs to) have always wondered who this was. My uncle is a WW2 veteran and is now in advanced stages of Parkinson's. I am hoping to share this information with him. Thank you!
